President of KnoName New Staff Writer for Khmerican

KnoName Media is proud to present the newest staff writer to join the Khmerican team, our one and only, Jae Om or you may know her simply as "Love."

KHMERICAN was created to serve the people and organizations interested in the state of Khmer America. Their commitment is to provide an online platform that encourages public engagement, discussion and connection of Khmer communities across the US and abroad. To fulfill this commitment, they publish original content and provide resources on and about Khmer America.

“I see Khmerican as a great representation of a generation of Khmers that want to make a difference. It’s encouraging and will definitely inspire others to reach out to those in their communities that want to showcase their cultures and people,” says Jae Om, a Virginia resident who works in the information technology and entertainment marketing sectors. Om is also currently pursuing a degree in broadcast journalism and has experience writing about entertainment news.

As an entrepreneur, a student, and a mother, it’s a wonder that Om has the drive to add yet another role to her list of duties—reporter for the Khmerican. However, it makes sense, given that she has a deep appreciation for her Cambodian heritage and the wisdom of her elders. She cites the local Cambodian New Year festivities as a joyful embrace of the culture, a point of solidarity with the Khmer community. Her parents are her personal heroes for what they survived through; their stories have helped her put her own struggles in perspective. She gives the older generation much credit for raising their children to traditional standards in a culture that in many ways runs to the contrary.

After arriving in the United States from Khao-I-Dang refugee camp at age 3, Om has spent her life on the east coast. “I’m only familiar with those here, and I must say, we need to step up as people and take ownership within our community. Cambodian Americans, in my opinion, are only proud when deemed necessary. Our youth are unaware of the history.”

Om herself would like to share her own knowledge of that history, having learned by taking the initiative and educating herself. But she also has an eye toward the future, wishing to establish herself as a journalist and continue learning about the culture.

“Working as a staff writer for the Khmerican, I hope to educate, inspire and motivate my fellow Cambodians and others alike to step up and make a difference in their communities.” Jae Om is our first representative in the mid-Atlantic region. - EC

Read more about The Khmerican here at http://www.khmerican.com/. You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter using the same handle.

Please take some time and congratulate her on her wonderful accomplisment! Congratulations!!

Paulina, More Than Just a Story

Paulina is a 17 year old girl living in a Cambodian gambling community in the United States. Immersed in a vibrant world where bets and wagers are a part of everyday living, young Paulina has found herself attracted to the game; a love understood and shared by her father, Sam, and an avid community of Cambodian gamblers. Met with strong disapproval from her sister Sopheap, Paulina remains strongly tied to the community. But soon she finds herself in the midst of her father’s war with addiction, and the realities of this world is unmasked; Paulina must inevitably choose between the world she is drawn to and the life she might someday want.

Written and directed by Caylee So, a Cambodian American from Northern, Virginia, Paulina is a story of family, addiction and sacrifice. A story that for some, might hit pretty close to home.

This short film goes into production in December, filming in Southern California. And due to the nature of the film, numerous personals of Southeast Asian decent are needed to fill the roles of patrons of a gambling house. All the support is needed from the SoCal community in order to make this project a huge success. Those interested are encouraged to email paulina.film@gmail.com or visit http://www.paulinafilm.com/ to learn more about this remarkable story.

The visual style for “Paulina,” the movie, aims to define the three main stages to which the protagonist goes through her journey:
  • The enjoyment of the perfect world (fun, vivid, colorful, inviting)
  • The realization of a menacing habit (asphyxiating, dangerous, mysterious, disappointing, confusing)
  • The decision to grow up and save herself (hopeful, controllable, promising) Likewise, the cinematography of this project also attempts to portray the culture that Paulina is part of, as a way to bring the audience closer to the main character, and thus, to the story.

Ali Kulture Leaves an Imprint in Hip-Hop

We have the pleasure of introducing a head turner from the DMV that goes by the name, Ali Kulture. He's had the opportunity to perform at numerous venues in DC and Virginia opening up for major acts in the game. Born in Pakistan, raised in San Jose CA and currently residing in Virginia. Mr. Kulture has been turning heads for quite some time now with his witty lyrics, brash delivery and unique rhyme patterns. Life is a test of will and Ali has an uncanny ability of capturing moments in his life with his music. Connected with family from the bay area under the umbrella of Greenhouse / Hunnitproof records, he carries the torch in the DMV. The recent momentum of hip hop in the Washington Metropolitan area has created a great arena for talent to shine and Ali Kulture is turning a lot of heads. Lyrics without substance are a façade and Ali puts soul into what he speaks. Being Muslim and an entrepreneur, Ali is dedicated to bringing about a change in the industry and leaving his mark one way or another.

Let it be known that Muslim rappers have influenced Hip-Hop for many years now. There are prominent players in the industry that share the same beliefs as Ali. Some are only rumored to be Muslim while others have proudly displayed their beliefs in the media. Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Mos Def, Freeway, Beanie Siegal, T-Pain, Jurassic 5, Rhymefest, AZ and Akon have all publicly expressed their religious beliefs using Rap music as their medium. Q-Tip, a former member of A Tribe Called Quest, converted to Islam back in the 1990s as well as Flesh-n-Bone of Bone Thugs & Harmony. Both Nas and Common have written lyrics inspired from the teachings of Islam.

How is Islam connected to Hip-Hop?
"It's part of our history and culture in Islam," says Tai, 25. "The traditional books of law and philosophy in Islam were written in poetry, and students memorize them with drums, basically singing out the poetry. And if you `beat' that up, it sounds just like rapping."

The connection between hip-hop and Islam was a natural one in the African-American community, where the religion already had strong roots.

"Islamic beliefs and values are seen as the standard in hip-hop," says Adisa Banjoko, a San Jose author who is writing a book on hip-hop and Islam. We used to go by Jihad, which means struggle in Arabic, but after Sept. 11, it was misinterpreted to mean holy war, and that's not the message we bring at all. Islam says to keep positive and be a role model, to make a difference. We try to reflect that in our music."

Read more about this topic, here.

Needless to say, Ali Kulture is making his way to the top of the DC music scene. You can catch him LIVE IN CONCERT this Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Dirty Martini located at 1223 Connecticut Ave NW, DC. Doors open at 8:30pm with performances scheduled to being at 10:30pm. Also performing that night will be Dope Inc. of the DMV and Paradise Inya Citi, lead vocalist for Cultural Affairz Band.

Local Artists Compete At Shine Saturdays

On October 22, 2011, local artists of different genres competed for a chance to win first place at the first ever Shine Saturdays song competition. This event was presented by SNRG in conjunction with KnoName Media taking place at Jammin Java located in Vienna, Virginia. The whole concept of the event is to provide local, aspiring musicians the opportunity to perform on stage in front of a live audience. A cash prize of $300 was awarded to Dope Inc., a rap duo with two members, Ru and Sammy. Performing alongside them, were Paradise Inya Citi, leading vocalist for popular band, Cultural Affairz and Toua, also a rising talent from the DC area.

I.Speak of SNRG, opened up the show performing just a couple of tracks to tease the audience before the competition. As a surprise, Caila Baby, who's been MIA for a few months now, graced the stage to spit her lyrics from the Hello World remix, done in collaboration with I.Speak.

There were 3 acts that competed. The first act goes by the name, The F.A.M. also known as The Fascinating, Artistic, Musicians consisting of 3 cousins aged 19, 20 and 21. They grew up in Northern, Virginia and began making music out of boredom one day. Taking the stage as the second competitor is a singer from Stafford, Virginia named Jenny Hajduk. She's been singing for about 6 years and has performed in DC at Bella Cafe. The crowd was moved by her performance at one point sticking their lighters in the air as they swayed to sounds of her acoustic guitar. Lastly, to the hit the stage is previously mentioned, Dope Inc. It was quite obvious who the crowd came out to support. Dope Inc. had the biggest reaction, with a loud roar heard outside the venue once they graced the stage.  This would be their second live performance, both at Jammin Java.

Proceeding the competition, I.Speak along with the rest of the SNRG family, LAStone and TrakFormer performed their lastest tracks produced by TrakFormer himself with DJ Asu Rock on the turntables. Judging the event was DJ Asu Rock, nationally known musician Sergio and Red, Gold, Green formerly known as The Five One.

The World Says Goodbye To Steve Jobs

On October 5, 2011, the world lost a modern day genius.  Steve Jobs, ex-CEO of Apple passed away at age 56.  Jobs is survived by his wife, Laurene, to whom he was married for 20 years; their three children; and a fourth child, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, from a previous relationship.  His life is a story to share.

Steve Jobs was the Chairman of the Board of Apple, which he co-founded in 1976. Apple is leading the consumer technology world with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, its family of iPod media players and iTunes media store, and its Mac computers and iLife and iWork application suites. Apple recently introduced iPad 2 which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.

Steve also co-founded and was the CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, which created some of the most successful and beloved animated films of all time including Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars and Ratatouille. Pixar merged with The Walt Disney Company in 2006 and Steve served on Disney's board of directors.

He was born in San Fransisco, California to a Syrian Immigrant and American graduate student. Steve grew up in the apricot orchards which later became known as Silicon Valley.

President Barack Obama said in a statement:
"Michelle and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Steve Jobs. Steve was among the greatest of American innovators - brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

By building one of the planet's most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. Steve was fond of saying that he lived every day like it was his last. Because he did, he transformed our lives, redefined entire industries, and achieved one of the rarest feats in human history: he changed the way each of us sees the world.

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve's wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him."
He will be sorely missed.  The world of technology will definitely not be the same.  Rest in peace.

Happy Anniversary to Fireday

Hip-Hop, RnB, Alternative Blues all in one room. It wasn't Friday at all, it was FIREDAY!  Jammin Java was packed by 9:30pm.  The venue filled with people of all ages by the end of the night.  There were lots of new faces in the room too.  I heard people traveled from Pennsylvania just to peep the scene out.  That's amazing.

First and foremost, I would like to thank all of the artists that showed up and rocked the stage.  I felt very lucky to have the opportunity to experience such an electic array of music.  It was a one of a kind show and your musical geniuses really set a tone for talent in this area.  Second, to all the fans and supporters, you guys are the best!  I cannot believe how loud the place was.  The cheering, hoot and holler from everyone made the evening that much better.  Fans dispersed amongst one another making it almost impossible to see who showed up to see who.

Big thanks to Cheryl Koo of The Other Duck. She traveled from Los Angeles to participate in this event.  The fashion show definitely gave the show a twist in entertainment.  I'm glad that she allowed us to experience her world of fashion.  The DMV needs to see more of you Cheryl :)

Last but not least, KnoName Media received tons of support and we appreciate everyone for it.  It's with your help that we're able to keep it moving and bring you great music and events.

Check out highlights from the show below:

KNM Meets The Temptations

My Girl inspired painting by
Rene Dickerson
Mo-Town Records! The Temptations!!!

Yesterday started off a bit slow with gray skies and light rain.  I, Jae Love, had the day off of work to run errands.  Sos and I had plans on visiting a client of his in Leesburg's Medlin Art Gallery during lunch.  His client, Rene Dickerson, is a well known artist whose latest portrait depicts an image inspired by The Temptations song, My Girl.  To our surprise, we actually got the privilege to meet the music legends in person.  I was in total shock.  We had to take pictures, of course.  I took a picture with Bruce and afterwards, he asked us if we were planning on attending their show later that evening at Wolf Trap.  Long story short, Bruce gave us tickets! We went and we had a blast.  The Temptations at Wolf Trap was my first concert ever in life.  I can't thank Sos enough for allowing me the opportunity to meet such wonderful people.

We're Bloggers Now!

It's quite apparent that KnoName Media has made its way to the blogworld.  Hello everyone, I'm Jae Love.  It's great to have you here on our blogsite.  We have been working so hard to get things in order since the start of the business in January of this year.  I am pleased to announce that we have partnered up with not only a new event management company but also a non-profit organization just last month.  We're launching a new website soon so please stay tuned for that announcement.

KnoName Media [KNM], for those who are new to the name, is a marketing and public relations company based out of the DC Metropolitan area.  Services are offered to local aspiring musicians and small businesses in the region.  The industry that we tend to focus in is Entertainment but that's not where we're limited to.  I take over the majority of the PR work, handling the media, producing all written materials and running the company's database.  Clients can choose individual services or have KNM create a custom package according to their particular need.  I can give you more information if you email me at mzjaelove@gmail.com or you can visit http://www.knonamemedia.weebly.com/.  We also have a twitter and facebook.  Take some time out of your day and check us out.  We strive to provide full service marketing solutions to any individual that is looking for moderately priced, top of the line service.  "Place your hands in ours and let's turn that name into Known Name."

The hopes of this blogsite is pretty simple, to have a place where we can place the latest news on our clients.  We'll share new music, tour dates and photographs as they come in.  Along with client information, KNM will use this blog as a portal to share what we feel is hot in the news and a must read for all.  We're very curious people and love spreading good and bad news to our audience.  We hope you find a place in your blogroll for us.  KNM ensures a good read. Leave comments and/or suggestions.  We are open to new ideas all the time.  Thank you!
